The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is an internationally recognised certification that verifies the organic status of textiles from the harvesting of raw fibres through to the final product, including labelling, processing, manufacturing, packaging, trading, distribution, and retail. To carry the GOTS label, a product must contain a minimum of 70% certified organic fibres (the “made with organic” label) or 95% certified organic fibres (the “organic” label). Critically, GOTS covers not just the fibre source but also the social and environmental criteria that all processing stages — including dyeing, printing, and finishing — must meet.
For garment manufacturers, achieving GOTS certification signals a serious commitment to transparency and ethical production. Major European and US retailers now list GOTS as a mandatory requirement for organic cotton product lines. The certification audit covers wastewater treatment, chemical inputs, worker welfare, and traceability across the entire supply chain. Buyers who specify GOTS are not just buying a label — they are buying confidence in the entire production story behind the fabric. Maintaining GOTS certification requires annual third-party audits and meticulous record-keeping, making it a meaningful differentiator that smaller, less organised factories cannot easily replicate.
